Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I suffer from diabetes, for which I am taking Metformin. But my weight has suddenly increased. I also suffer from hypertension, for which I am taking Chlorthalidone. What to do?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

As a diabetic, it is essential to manage your blood sugar levels effectively to prevent complications associated with the condition. While Metformin (biguanide) is generally considered the first-line medication for type 2 diabetes, Pioglitazone (anti-diabetic) can also be an effective treatment option for some individuals.

In your case, the addition of Pioglitazone to your treatment regimen may have contributed to the weight gain you have experienced. Pioglitazone is known to cause weight gain in some people, which can make it more challenging to manage blood sugar levels over time.

Additionally, the weight gain may also have contributed to the variability in your fasting blood sugar (FBS) and postprandial blood sugar (PPBS) levels. Higher body weight can lead to insulin resistance, making it more difficult for your body to regulate blood sugar levels effectively.

Chlorthalidone (thiazide-like diuretic) is not associated with an increase in blood sugar levels. It is essential to monitor your FBS and PPBS closely while taking this medication, as it can cause some people to become more insulin-resistant over time. Your healthcare provider may recommend regular blood sugar monitoring and adjustments to your diabetes management plan as needed.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.
