Can breathlessness and tightness in the chest upon coughing be a sign of respiratory tract infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am experiencing a bad wet cough. I suffer from breathlessness and tightness in the chest on coughing. I also tend to sneeze a lot, and have a blocked nose. There is no mucus coming out even after blowing my nose multiple times. Should I take a day off from work and stay at home?

Please answer back.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Based on your symptoms, it is possible that you have a respiratory infection such as a cold or flu, or even potentially COVID -19. I suggest you stay at home, or work from home until you visit a healthcare provider and determine the cause of your symptoms.

In the meantime follow the steps given below -

  1. You can take over-the-counter medications such as decongestants or cough suppressants to help manage your symptoms.
  2. It is also important to stay hydrated and get plenty of rest to help your body fight off the infection.

Kindly visit your healthcare provider and speak to them about your concerns.

I hope this has helped you out.

Thanks and regards.
