Destructive interference stops both frequencies when the highest point of one frequency crosses paths with the lowest point of its opposite frequency (as seen in the left image). Tinnitus:

Tinnitus is a persistent ringing or buzzing disturbance in the ears that gets louder when there is no background noise outside. It is a widespread condition that can impact people of all ages and be brought on by anything that harms or meddles with the delicate interior tissues of the ears.

Although many people claim that wearing ANC headphones causes them to develop tinnitus, there is no proven link between the two. The enhanced noise reduction provided by ANC headphones is probably responsible for the experience of tinnitus. For instance, if one uses noise-canceling headphones while studying in a hallway or library, the background noise may almost completely disappear, making us acutely conscious of the ringing in our ears.
