When levels of these hormones are affected, and there is a decrease in these hormone levels, there is a feeling of depression, a lack of interest in certain tasks, and tiredness without any physical activity, called laziness.

Many signals are sent by the brain for any type of action to be performed. For the good functioning of the brain, the individual should be given good food so that the brain sends positive signals.

Dopamine, which is also a neurotransmitter, is responsible for motivation. Dopamine gives a signal to the brain to carry out good activity. This is because it highlights the activity as beneficial for survival. This hormone helps to push and remain at work for long hours. Without it, we cannot do anything.

Dopamine helps control movements. In Parkinson's disease, individuals show low levels of dopamine. This may be because of the damaged brain areas in individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease.

Many people need more motivation and are lazy. As people get older, there may be a shift in mood and motivation. Many times, an imbalance in hormones is responsible for these changes.

Hormones play a major role in motivation. As individuals age, hormone levels get affected. A hormone called testosterone drops in level among both men and women. Among men, its levels are at their peak in their 30s. But it keeps dropping every year by 1-2 percent. When there is a drop in testosterone, motivation also drops.

According to a study, there is an association between testosterone and a chemical in the brain. When testosterone gets attached to the receptors in the brain, they release endorphins responsible for happiness, motivation, and engagement. Testosterone also converts dihydrotestosterone ( DHT). This is one more hormone that is responsible for mood, thinking, and overall ambition.

Among women, there can be a drop in motivation due to hormonal changes that take place with age as they approach perimenopause and menopause. At around the age of 40, along with a drop in testosterone levels, there is a drop in estrogen and progesterone levels.

Estrogen is responsible for mood and cognition (thinking). This hormone processes the information by changing the chemistry of the brain. This allows the messages to be transmitted from one neuron to another. Progesterone acts as a key to regulating mood and sleep. When estrogen and progesterone levels drop among women, they face difficulty multitasking, problems with short-term memory, and feeling less focused.

Symptoms faced by women in the perimenopause stage

  • Decreased motivation.

  • Decreased pleasure sense.

  • The mood gets affected.

  • Disturbances in sleep.

Because of these symptoms, their quality of life is affected. They face a perfect storm and lose interest in things they previously loved.

The thyroid gland produces T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). Many T3 receptors are found in the brain. When the thyroid gland cannot produce enough T3 hormones, it leads to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Increased inflammation may lead to cognitive and emotional health issues, especially in the brain. These may, in turn, show symptoms of laziness.

How to Treat Hormonal Imbalance?

In treating hormonal imbalances, knowing about hormones and what is happening is the first step to recovery. Knowledge is power. Hence, knowing where the person stands for the best recovery is important. It is very challenging to deal with hormonal imbalances.

  • Levels of testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone hormones are checked.
