Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Me and my wife had sex and she missed her period. After 50 days she took abortion pills to avoid pregnancy. What steps should be taken to prevent heavy bleeding?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I am sure you have typed the wrong days of taking the pill or are you mentioning the MTP (Mifepristone and Misoprostol) pill? The pills are effective only within 72 hours and most effective if taken within 24 hours, the earlier the better. I-pill or Unwanted 72 has a high dose of Progesterone hormone which is produced in the body in the second half of the period after ovulation. This pill will suddenly increase the thickness of the inner lining of the uterus, making it unfavorable for a possible pregnancy to sit. As it is a single dose, it has no strength to stand on, so it falls off and you get period or bleeding of the increased thickness within 7 to 10 days. Bleeding will be thicker, and darker, with lower abdominal discomfort or pain. But this will not be due too much to take medications. If you have taken the MTP pill, then you can have antacids like Pantocid-D or Pan-D or Pansec-D (Pantoprazole) twice a day on an empty stomach for the acidity and vomiting tendency of the pill. During bleeding, you want the whole thing to go out, so if you try to stop or reduce bleeding that is incomplete abortion. You can have a tablet of Trapic-MF or Tranostat-M or Pause-MF (Tranexamic acid and Mefenamic acid) twice or thrice a day to reduce the pain and bleeding a bit. Take the medications after consulting your specialist doctor.
