Can a woman continue to experience pregnancy symptoms despite undergoing a medical abortion?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a medical abortion four weeks back and had all the cramping and bleeding for a week, but surprisingly I feel like I am still pregnant. I have some signs of pregnancy, like tender breasts, back pain, and weird cravings. Is it possible to remain pregnant after an abortion?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It would be better if you send me further details regarding your miscarriage, like gestational age at the time of taking medications, the name of the medicines taken, and the post-miscarriage scan report is done. Pregnancy hormones gradually reduce after delivery and miscarriage. It can take three weeks or even longer. It is necessary to check that miscarriage is done completely and that all products are removed as if any product remains inside can be a source of infection and can cause pain, bleeding, etc., so if you have any spots or brown discharge, it better to be on the safe side and have one transvaginal scan to check for uterus clearance. If it is clear, it might be some after-effects of miscarriage and hormonal changes or gastric upset causing the issues. Have a soft, healthy diet with plenty of water, fruits, and vegetables. Do daily exercise, and try to have a normal BMI and weight. If any health issues, you have then try to have a check-up and complete regular treatment. Avoid constipation. It is another rare possibility that you get pregnant again as this is quite a fertile period. But you can check with serum beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) by doing twice with an interval of 48 hours. If it shows an increase of more than 60 % from the first, then it is normal progressive pregnancy, but if it shows reduction, it is a miscarriage after effects. If beta hCG increases but is less than 60 %, then it is alarming as you have pain, and the pregnancy could be outside the uterus and need urgent intervention. In case of severe bleeding or pain and a positive pregnancy test, immediately rush to a gynecologist emergency for proper investigations and treatment. I hope you understand that you need an urgent beta hCG and a transvaginal scan. I hope things will be normal.

Thank you.
