Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got the results back from my pregnancy blood test and I am worried. It says abnormal positive for my urine and it says my hCG is 3750 mlU/mL. The range is high above normal and I do not get to see my doctor again until a week. Is anything wrong with me?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There is nothing wrong with the result. The urine pregnancy test confirms that you are pregnant and so does the hCG (human choronic gonadotropin) test. The red mark is simply because if you would see the lab report, there reference levels are normal to negative in urine pregnancy test, which means if it is positive then they label it a s abnormal or red. Similarly, in hCG test, the reference given is for non pregnant and post menopausal but not for pregnant women, so any level of hCG more than 5 to 10 is abnormal for the lab indicating and confirming that you are pregnant and that's it . Nothing actually abnormal about your pregnancy. The hCG levels are normal for a five to six weeks of gestation. When was your last menstrual period?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My last menstrual period was 40 days ago.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

By calculating your gestational age from your LMP (last menstrual period), it is five weeks and five days, which is early pregnancy and the levels of hCG are appropriate for the gestational age. The hCG levels would increase hence at the rate of more than 63 % increase every 48 hrs for a viable developing pregnancy. You may get an ultrasound pelvis done after 10 days to check for location and viability of pregnancy as by then one can appreciate fetal heartbeat as well which is a positive sign for a viable pregnancy. Lastly, there is no need for you to be worried in any manner about the lab results, they are absolutely normal.

Thank you.
