Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have minor beta thalassemia, which I inherited from my mother, but unlike her (asymptomatic), I experience anemia symptoms like paleness, shortness of breath after the least effort, feeling tired all the time, and broken nails. I would like to know if these symptoms could be due to a lack of iron.
Could people with minor beta thalassemia also experience iron deficiency anemia, considering that I have heavy menstrual cycles and follow a very poor diet?
Kindly help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have reviewed your query, and here is my advice. Yes, your symptoms point towards iron deficiency anemia. In beta thalassemia minor, a patient usually feels more fatigue on exertion as compared to normal people without thalassemia. However, do not worry about thalassemia minor; they can live a normal life. People with thalassemia can develop iron deficiency anemia secondarily. So rule it out by CBC profile (complete blood count) with blood indices as well. You can revert back with reports so that I can guide you further.
I hope this has helped you.
Thank you.
