Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply. Can indigestion last for two weeks every day? Is a feeling of intermittent growling in the upper stomach a symptom of that?

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Ghulam Fareed

Hello,

Glad to have you back!

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

Yes, indigestion can last for a couple of weeks, if not treated properly. On and off stomach growl is due to the usual contractions of the stomach (increases in case of indigestion or gastritis). I will list some important points for you, duration of symptoms is always important, and prolonged symptoms and non-resolving symptoms after medical trial are something that should not be ignored. Your symptoms are of two weeks duration and you did not mention any medicine as such, so I recommended a medical trial with some basic dietary precautions. Other important things which we noticed are unintentional weight loss, family history of chronic diseases like tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, and blood in vomiting or stools. You did not mention any of the above in your case, so no alarming features. Sometimes, stress (work-related or social) can cause stomach upset in sensitive individuals, in that case, avoiding stressors can help to relieve symptoms, other than what I have recommended already.

Thank you for consulting me.

Patient's Query

Thank you. A month ago from only 2 days I did have bright red blood on my toliet paper when after a very hard stool. I have had internal hemorrhoids in the past and assumed it was that or that the hard stool cut the inside. It only last two days and I felt like I could feel the pas inside my rectum. I have watched closely since then and there has been no blood at all. Is that ok?

Hello, I am sorry for the delayed response, I had some internet issues at my end. Fresh per rectal bleeding , small amount especially after passing hard stools, which lasted for only 2 days is most likely related to 1) internal hemorhoids 2) Small anal fissure ( hard stools cut inside mucosa , causing small bleed and pain at anal verge ) Your own assessment regarding that was right. For this, 1) Drink plenty of water , use high fiber diet like vegetables, salads etc 2) you can add psyllium husk if you have history of constipation on and off, target is to pass soft stools daily, this will heal small anal fissure and also help reducing internal hemorhoids aswell 3) Now, incase you had similar problem in future and there is pain at anal verge with small amount of bleed, for this 4) Apply local anesthesia gel (lidocaine gel) at anal verge 2-4 minutes before passing stools or incase of pain or irritation at anal verge, this will reduce pain and discomfort 5) Warm water sit baths, take a small tub of water , put small amount of common anti-septic in it and sit in it for 5-10 mins , this will promote anal fissure healing. 6) avoid constipation during these days as I already mentioned 7) These are simple home remedies which can be done , incase of anal fissure. Wishing you excellent health kind regards
