I have low temperature. Is it a matter of concern?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female, approximately 5 feet, and weigh 115 pounds. I have not been feeling myself the past few days. So, this morning I checked my temperature and it was 97.5, and now it is 96.1 degree Fahrenheit. This worries me as my temperature normally stays around 98.9 degree Fahrenheit. I am feeling worse today but cannot pinpoint exactly what is wrong. I just generally feel bad. Is this something I should worry about?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If the core body temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit it is a potentially serious condition and immediate treatment must be sought. If you already feel unwell it would be a good idea to go to the ER now given the temperature is 96 or dropping. Also, keep yourself warm. If you have been cold lately, this could be a cause. If this often happens you might want to get your thyroid and adrenal hormones checked out. I hope this helps. Thank you and take care. Regards.

The Probable causes

The probable causes are exposure to cold weather.

Treatment plan

The treatment plan is to keep yourself very warm and go to ER if your temperature does not rise or continue to fall as soon as possible.

Preventive measures

The preventive measure is to stay away from the cold.
