Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am concerned about having intercourse with an unknown partner as the condom broke in between. We are not sure if this incident happened immediately before penetration or after it. I swiftly left after this incident as it started to worry me. She did mention that she tests regularly. Despite the assurances, I am still worried. Do I need to take any medication to reduce the possible chances of HIV infection?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

It is essential to remember that the risk of contracting HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) through a single act of unprotected intercourse is low, especially if the other person has tested negative for HIV and is practicing safe sex. However, it is still crucial to take precautions and get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as soon as possible.

If you are concerned about your risk of HIV infection, you may want to consider starting post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). PEP is a course of antiretroviral medication that can reduce the risk of HIV transmission if taken within 72 hours of exposure. However, it is essential to seek medical attention immediately and consult a healthcare provider to determine if PEP is appropriate for your situation.

In addition to PEP, it is crucial to practice safe sex in the future, including using condoms consistently and correctly, getting tested for STIs regularly, and communicating openly and honestly with your sexual partners about your health status and any potential risks. Remember that prevention is always better than cure, and taking proactive steps to protect your health can help ensure a healthy and happy future.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
