Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 23-year-old male. I live in a cold environment. I get chilblains every winter on my fingers and toes (they become swollen red and itchy). I always keep myself warm wear gloves and socks all times but still get them. Is there any solution for this medicine, diet, and exercise? I am currently taking calcium channel blockers.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Chilblain is one of the inflammatory disorders due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. Usually in travelers and can be in families. Precautions play a very important role. I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. Regular care by soaking in warm water followed by drying and application of moisturizing creams when required.
  2. Wearing warm clothes in layers. Keeping warm both the body and peripheries like hands, feet, and nose is important.
  3. Regular exercises minimum 4 to 5 days per week helps.
  4. Avoid sudden temperature changes.
  5. Use Nifedipine, UVB rays, Nitroglycerin and steroid containing creams. Vitamin D and calcium supplements can be tried.
  6. Avoid smoking, nicotine, caffeine products.
  7. Control of diabetes is important if diabetic.

I hope this helps. Thank you.
