Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My tooth had become chipped. As I have the chipped tooth with me, how do I keep it preserved?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Unfortunately, a chipped tooth can only be saved if it is under ten years of age.

Once adult tooth chips off or fractures, it cannot be stuck or attached back in place.

You will need to get the chipped part fixed. You do not need to keep the chipped-off portion of the tooth. There are three types of tooth fractures.

If only the first two layers of enamel or dentin are chipped, and if you have no pain or discomfort, you may go to the dentist to fix the chipped-off tooth portion with composite, a white tooth filling.

If the fracture continues into the root canal or vertically down to the root canal space, you will require root canal therapy (RCT), after which a crown should be placed.

Or, in severe instances, the tooth should be extracted from what you describe as a chipped-off part.

So these are the alternatives you have, which you may discuss with your dentist. Do not be concerned about the chipped area.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
