Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My tooth has chipped. Since I have the chipped piece with me, how should I preserve it?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Unfortunately, a chipped tooth can only be saved in children under ten. Once an adult tooth chips or fractures, it cannot be reattached. You will need to have the chipped area repaired. There is no need to keep the broken piece of the tooth. There are three types of tooth fractures. If only the first two layers—the enamel or dentin—are chipped and you are not experiencing pain or discomfort, a dentist can easily repair it with a composite, a white tooth-colored filling.
However, if the fracture extends into the root canal or vertically down to the root, a root canal treatment (RCT) will be required, followed by a crown. In more severe cases, the tooth may need to be extracted depending on the extent of the damage. These are the treatment options available, and you can discuss them with your dentist. Do not worry too much about the chipped portion—it can be managed.
I hope this has helped you.
Thank you.
