Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a recurring injury in the thumb of my dominant hand that originated from putting on a wet suit last year. Since then, I had periods without pain and with pain. Today, I was moving a desk, which seemed worse than ever. I have tried ice, but the pain shoots up to my elbow, affecting my pointer finger also. Is ice the way to go, or would heat be better?

Thank you.

Hello,

Thank you for stopping by!

I am here to provide expert opinions on your medical issues.

You have a thumb injury, as per history. It might be a ligament sprain or a fracture depending on the pain severity and swelling. Your thumb might need immobilization by splint cast or bandage. Take rest. Avoid strenuous work with your thumb for a few days. An ice pack wrapped in a cotton cloth can be applied twice to three times daily. After consulting your specialist doctor, Ibuprofen 200 mg twice daily can be taken for five days. A local part X-ray needs to be done to rule out a fracture. Consult a nearby orthopedic surgeon for examination, keeping all this in mind. If required, the doctor will advise physiotherapy exercises.

I hope your concern is solved.

Thank you.
