I have constipation due to intake of Calcigard retard. What should I do now?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a constipation problem. I think my constipation is due to calcigard retard 20 mg. Other medicines are Trental 400 mg twice daily for the past twenty years for Raynauds. Five years back I underwent surgery for CSF rhinorrhea. For BP, I am taking Telsartan 40 mg and Ecospirin 75 mg.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand this concern.

Since how long have you had this issue of constipation? How frequently do you pass stools per week? Is passing stools painful? Is there any blood in your stools? Do you strain while defecating? Does anything come out while defecating? Is there any abdominal pain associated with it?

I will suggest laxatives to you, but it will be better to consult your cardiologist too, for a shift from Verapamil to another drug, because calcium channel blockers can frequently cause constipation.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

How long can I take this safely and what is the maximum dose (i.e. sachets to take)? Can I take Softovac with this?

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You can take Ispaghol husk lifelong.

Take a Polyethylene Glycol sachet for two weeks and then as needed. You can take up to three sachets daily in divided doses. No need for Lactulose (or any other laxative syrup) with this.

Thank you.
