Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a constipation problem. I think my constipation is due to calcigard retard 20 mg. Other medicines are Trental 400 mg twice daily for the past twenty years for Raynauds. Five years back I underwent surgery for CSF rhinorrhea. For BP, I am taking Telsartan 40 mg and Ecospirin 75 mg.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Since how long you have this issue of constipation? And how frequently do you pass stools per week? Is passing stools painful? Is there any blood in your stools? Do you strain while defecating? Does anything come out while defecating? Is there any abdominal pain associated with it?

I will suggest laxatives to you but it will be better to consult your cardiologist too, for the shift of Calciguard retard to another drug because calcium channel blockers can frequently cause constipation.

The Probable causes

Drug-induced constipation?

Investigations to be done

TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). Blood sugar. Serum calcium.

Treatment plan

Polyethylene glycol sachet in one glass of water once daily (you can increase the dose according to response). Ispaghol husk two teaspoons in a glass of water twice daily.

Preventive measures

Increase water intake. Daily exercise 20 - 30 minutes.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

How long can I take this safely and what is the maximum dose (i.e. sachets to take)? Can I take Softovac with this?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You can take Ispaghol husk life long.

Take polyethylene glycol sachet for two weeks and then as per need. You can take up to three sachets daily in divided doses. No need of Sofotovac with this.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
