Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have dark circles covering my whole eye area, including the nose bridge. The rest of my face is significantly lighter. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As per the medical history, dark circles occur because of stress, genetic factors, hormonal changes, anxiety, inadequate diet, and water intake. In addition, sleep deprivation, straining of eyes because of computer or mobile light exposures, and allergic reactions can also lead to dark circles.

The presence of dark circles under the eyes occurs due to increased blood circulation and the prominence of blood vessels present under the skin of the eyes. It is often formed as a compensatory mechanism due to inadequate oxygen in the eye due to stress, sleeplessness, fatigue, and eye-straining. They become visible as dark circles due to the under-eye skin being thinner than the facial skin. Genetic susceptibility is a family history of dark circles, which can be another factor causing discoloration under the eyes.

I advise you consult a specialist and take the medicines mentioned below with their consent.

  1. Make sure to get enough sleep and avoid straining of eyes under dim light due to computers, mobiles, or laptops; make sure to keep under the eye area moisturized. Consume at least 12 glasses of water daily.
  2. Vitamin C 10 % serum is to be applied on the face and under the eyes. Take five drops and rub between palms and apply under the eyes twice daily after face wash.
  3. Vitamins B3 and vitamin E enriched creams or Hyaluronic Acid creams can be applied twice daily. Apply three to four dots under the eyes and dab them into the under-eye skin. Kojic dipalmitate enriched cream is to be applied at night in a thin layer on the under-eye area five minutes before, using lusana eye cream.
  4. Sunscreen SPF 50 is to be used every two hours from 9 am to 5 pm. It can be applied on top of the previous layer, and washing each time before the repeated application is not required.
  5. Chemical peel under the eyes is a procedure for skin rejuvenation and dark circles under the eyes, done in sessions. Kindly consult a dermatologist in person for the procedure. There are other laser therapies also available for reducing dark circles.
  6. At-home remedies, including cold fomentation by applying ice wrapped in a towel, may be done twice daily in the morning and at night before applying the under-eye products. Refrigerated green tea bags also may be used, which helps reduce the visibility of blood vessels under the eyes.

The skin changes will take time, so consistency with the above skincare routine is essential.

I hope it will work.
