Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

When I was younger, I had a bottle rocket blow up in my eye. It left a scar in front of my pupil, so I am no longer able to see out of the eye, and am considered legally blind. My pupil stays dilated all the time, and where it is not able to focus on anything, it wonders to the right. I was wondering if there is any new surgery, that could possibly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thankfully only one eye was affected and I hope your other eye is intact and fully functional. Unfortunately, a dilated pupil that does not react to light in the affected eye means that it is no longer transmitting information to the brain and therefore is considered non functional. In most cases those changes are irreversible and the eye is no longer considered a functioning organ. But, hope dies last, and to cheer you up a bit, there are many ongoing clinical researches on the restoration of vision in blind eyes and mainly involve implanting a chip in the retina and connecting it to the brain and although the results are not what a patient would expect, nonetheless it helps the eye detect objects on a very primitive level. As I said earlier, thank God that only one eye was affected and you should take care of it by undergoing a yearly comprehensive eye exam. I wish you best of luck.
