My baby's temperature increases in the morning and falls after taking Nurofen. Why?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My baby was born before a year at a gestation period of 27 weeks with a weight of 730 grams. She spent all the time in the hospital. Now she is having strange diseases. She has a fever of 38 degrees for almost 25 days. She is given with antibiotic Vancomycin. Her temperature gets raised in the morning from 10 'o clock to 12 'o clock. After getting Nurofen, her temperature falls down for four hours and it starts again in the morning. She has BPD. X-rays are taken and there are no abnormal changes seen. All the analyses are normal. She does not have a sign of infection. She has tracheostoma and it was tested. There is an absence of infection over there. What is the cause?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through the query and I understand your concern. If your baby is active, feeding well, gaining weight, and passing urine well, then your baby can have antibiotic fever as your baby was taking antibiotics for a very long period. There is nothing to be worried about. Discontinue giving antibiotics and give only Paracetamol when the temperature goes beyond 38 degrees. You can continue taking other treatments for BPD (borderline personality disorder). You need to take care of tracheostomy as advised and have a close watch on the urine. If your baby is not active or not feeding well or not gaining weight, then you need to do further investigations such as blood culture and fungal culture.
