Can a surgical procedure to remove the outgrowth inside the ear canal cause ear membrane damage and permanent hearing loss?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I started having ear bleeding after my doctor pulled what he thought was some outgrowth inside my ear canal. How do I know that he was not pulling my ear membrane? I was able to hear about 60 % before going to the doctor, and now I can hardly hear (only about 10 percent) on the left side of my ear. I also have ear pain. I am on strong antibiotics and pain medication, Ibuprofen 800 mg, and waiting for an ENT doctor appointment. I was so nervous that the doctor damaged my ear membrane, fearing permanent hearing loss. Can you please help? Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. Do not panic even if your eardrum is injured; the trauma of the ear membrane can heal spontaneously. You need a good endoscopic ear examination to see what happens in your external ear. You may need to perform a tympanometry and pure tone audiometry. Just keep your ear dry and away from water. Avoid sneezing, coughing, and straining. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
