Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My right ear pains when I touch inside. There is no discharge, and I think I scratched my ear canal two days ago with my little finger. What should I do now?

Answered by Dr. Vinay. S. Bhat

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Tenderness while pressing in the outer part of the ear canal with a history of injury to the ear is suggestive of a condition known as ear furuncle. It is nothing but a boil in the ear canal. Treatment would include an antibiotic and a painkiller. The addition of an ear drop is also helpful. I suggest you take the tablet Taxim-OF (Cefixime and Ofloxacin) 200 mg twice daily after food and use Candibiotic (Beclometasone, Neomycin, and Clotrimazole) ear drops three times daily for five days. The tablet Pantoprazole 40 mg once daily can be taken before food if you develop symptoms of gastric irritation such as stomach pain or burning sensation in the chest. Consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them and take medications with their consent.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

I am doing everything as you told me. I heard a bubbling sound occasionally in my left ear after a flight journey, so a doctor told me to do the Valsalva maneuver. After doing it, the bubbling sound stopped automatically, but I started feeling pain in my right ear. There is no difficulty in hearing or discharge. I hope ear drops will help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Normal hearing rules out any middle ear infection, so it has to be furuncle, a common external auditory canal infection. So treatment suggested should be good enough.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
