Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Currently, I am 32 years old and I am extremely overweight. I sit in front of my computer for long hours due to my job and I eat unhealthy foods. Eight months back, I took a four-hour flight and I started to have swelling on my feet, ankles, and legs. I got better after going home for a couple of weeks. After a week, I took a four-hour flight and I got the same edema on my foot, ankles, and legs. I also had foot pain with increased pressure. I do not have any pain in my chest but I feel congested. I am concerned about the problem. Please give your valuable opinion.

Regards.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

The swelling in your feet, ankles, and legs that occurred after flights may be related to a condition called edema. Prolonged sitting during the flight can contribute to poor blood circulation in the legs, leading to fluid retention and swelling. The foot pain and increased pressure may also be related to this condition.Considering you are overweight and have a sedentary lifestyle due to your job, these factors may be contributing to your symptoms. Being overweight can put extra pressure on your legs and lead to circulatory issues. Here are some suggestions you can consider:1. Get lab tests done.

2. Physical Activity: Incorporate regular physical activity into your daily routine, even if it is just starting with light exercises. Physical activity can help improve circulation and overall health.

3. Healthy Diet: Gradually transition to a healthier diet with balanced nutrition. Reduce the intake of processed foods, sugary beverages, and unhealthy snacks. Focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of water.

4 Stay well-hydrated during flights and in your daily life. Dehydration can worsen edema, so drink enough water.

5. Leg Exercises during Flights: If possible, perform simple leg exercises during long flights. Ankle circles, foot pumps, and leg lifts, while seated, can help improve circulation.

6. Compression Stockings: Consider wearing compression stockings during flights or when sitting for extended periods. These can help improve blood flow in the legs and reduce swelling.

7. Breaks during Work: If your job requires long hours of sitting, try to take short breaks every hour to stretch your legs and move around.

8. Weight Management: Work on achieving a healthy weight through a combination of a balanced diet and regular exercise.

9. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can worsen circulation problems, so it is best to avoid them.Feel free to contact me for further queries.

Regards.
