Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a lymph node on the posterior side of my neck for three years. Its size and shape resemble that of a peanut, and it is movable. Two months before, I had another lymph node in front of my neck. It is also a small-sized lymph node and not increasing in size. I have a fear of lymphoma, and also I do not have any other symptoms. I doubt whether lymph nodes can be permanent in this size? I lost some weight, but I do not have another lymph node other than the neck area. I went to a GP, and she examined other areas and there is no lymph node. She also said it is insignificant. Because of my anxiety, she advises biopsy. Day by day, my anxiety is increasing. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Lymph nodes are significant when their size is more than 1-1.5 cm. You do not have to be anxious about anything. I would like to know whether you have any loss of appetite. This is just to rule out some conditions. Sometimes lymph node enlargement can also occur because of an unhealthy diet. I would suggest you to add more proteins to diet and eat healthy to maintain a good immune system.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I do not have a loss of appetite. I also have a preauricular lymph node, but I had a swelling over the tragus before two weeks. And also, I have acne over my jawline areas. Is it not serious if lymph nodes are enlarged permanently? Or I have to concern, and do any other blood test? It makes me so anxious because the whole day I am thinking about lymph node and I do not have a fever but my body temperature seems hot when I touch. When I measure with a thermometer, it maintains 97-98 c.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Lymph nodes should not be enlarged permanently. That is the reason why your GP advised you to get a biopsy done to be sure. Once the biopsy results are clear, you do not have anything to worry about. Some multivitamins and a healthy lifestyle will take care of the lymph nodes.

Lymph nodes carry lymph fluid so that there is no fluid collection elsewhere in the body. When these lymph nodes are enlarged, there is some blockage to the lymph's flow. But this is most often self-resolving if you do not have any other complaints. You call it fever when body temperature is more than 100.4 degrees F. So you do not have a fever either. Also, acne has nothing to do with lymph nodes.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

So I have to do a biopsy?

Answered by Dr. Sanya Dhingra

Hello,

Welcome back to iclniq.com.

Yes, I would advise you to get the following done.

1. Biopsy of the lymph nodes.

2. HIV testing.

In case you have an evening rise of temperature, I would suggest you go for an -x ray of the chest and sputum culture (to rule out tuberculosis infection).

Please know that these tests are being ordered to rule out the commonest causes of enlarged lymph nodes. Because you have to understand that lymphadenopathy is not a disease but a symptom or sign which is not specific. Please be at ease and do not get anxious.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
