Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex and have been feeling weak, with slight headaches and sensations in my palms and feet. My HIV test results are all negative. My question is, if the HIV tests are truly conclusive, then why am I still having all these symptoms?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The risk of HIV acquisition after unprotected vaginal sex is 4/10,000 exposure. So, not all encounters will end up with HIV. It is good that your test at 30 days post-exposure is negative. The majority (95 %) of the people who are infected with HIV develop HIV antibodies by 3 to 4 weeks of exposure and almost all who are infected develop antibodies by three months. The symptoms you are having can be due to various reasons and cannot be necessarily attributed to HIV alone.

I suggest you to get an evaluation by a general physician and a routine hemogram, biochemistry, serum vitamin D3, and vitamin B12 levels. I also suggest you to get a repeat confirmatory HIV antibody test at three months after the last unprotected exposure. There is no need to repeat it in between.

I hope this helps.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
