Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is 3-year-old and has had a 102.1 degrees Fahrenheit fever with chills for almost 24 hours. He has a cough and had been vomiting last night as well. The fever only went down for a little bit with Tylenol. He has been sleeping a lot since.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As per the limited information provided, the thing which is worrisome is "sleeping a lot." Fever, vomiting, and cough all favor some infections, and commonly it is a viral infection. If your son wakes up easily, responds to you properly, and accepts food orally, then the first thing is to bring the fever down. Once the temperature is normal and if he is still over sleepy, you need to take him to the emergency department for a complete check-up.

As he is also vomiting, you can use Tylenol (Acetaminophen) suppository 250 mg, to be inserted in the anus once only and wait for a maximum of one hour. If the fever does not subside and he remains sleepy, take him to the emergency. If he is accepting food orally, give him plenty of fluids (water, milk, juice, soups). Once the fever subsides, and he is active and playful, then you can just continue to give Paracetamol syrup orally for the fever considering it to be a viral fever. Consult your specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medication with their consent,

I hope it is clear to you that sleepiness is something that needs to be taken seriously.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.
