Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I forget the things in a very short period. I am a competitive exam aspirant and have read many chapters at least 10 to 15 times but still do not remember anything. I remember only 5 to 10 % of concepts in class and can understand everything very easily but cannot remember anything. I remember it only for three to four days. Why is this happening and what is this condition called?

Thank you.

Hello,

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. I read your case and it is a normal problem at this age especially when preparing for competitive exams. You may be under stress due to exams. You should try to follow the below lifestyle to deal with it.

  1. You should do exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes like at least going for a walk. It will reduce stress.
  2. You should do meditation for 20 minutes daily, just sit in one place in a comfortable position and try to concentrate on your normal breathing. Do not stop or force yourself to stop your thoughts, just let it be. It will increase concentration.
  3. You should eat healthy home-cooked food, and avoid junk foods.
  4. You must drink enough water.
  5. You should spend quality time with friends and family daily.
  6. You should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills or language or musical instruments.
  7. You should take enough seven to eight hours of sleep daily.
  8. You must avoid tobacco or alcohol, or any substance abuse.
  9. Live your life, do not just spend it.
  10. Be bold and confident.
  11. You must prepare with the help of the guidance of friends or seniors.
  12. Do not just read but try to find a way to memorize it. Like imagination, the method, making flowcharts, making short notes sticking them on your room walls, or making drawings or mnemonics.
  13. You should read with one good friend. Discuss the topic with him so it will be easier to memorize and clear your concept.
  14. Do not just keep reading. Take a break in between reading. Make a schedule and stick with it.
  15. You must get the following blood investigations:

    1. CBC (complete blood profile).
    2. Thyroid profile.
    3. Vitamin B12.
    4. Vitamin D3.
    5. I hope your query got resolved.

Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

      Thank you.
