What could be the reason of black spots on the face?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Two years ago, I got some four or five black dots on my face, which looked like moles. But, I think it is spreading. The count is now 30 to 40. What can I do? Can you please suggest any treatment or medicine? Please note that my skin type is oily, and my mom also has this problem.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

From your description, I think they could be freckles. Do send me images of the same, so I can confirm my diagnosis. Freckles or ephelides are common in individuals who sunburn easily and do not tan, whereas it is uncommon among people who are dark complexioned. I suggest trying 30 % Trichloroacetic acid cautery (TCA) or topical treatment with Depiwhite cream (combination of Hydroquinone and Kojic acid). It can be applied every night for 16 weeks. Follow certain sun protection measures like:

  1. Avoid the midday sun, especially from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
  2. Seek shade whenever possible.
  3. Wear broad-brimmed hats.
  4. Apply Suncros soft gel sunscreen with SPF 50 over the face in the morning. Repeat every four hours.
  1. Thank you.
