Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I’m a 19-year-old male and have been dealing with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) for the past few months. I’ve been experiencing pain in my upper chest, rib cage, arms, and back. I also have shortness of breath that doesn't improve unless I take proton pump inhibitors. In addition, I have a stuffy nose but no fever.
I used to drink alcohol before going to bed. Could a weak stomach cause all these symptoms, or might there be a more serious underlying issue?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I’ve read your query and completely understand your concern.
Your symptoms may be due to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), which is a common condition. However, there are a few other possibilities to consider. One is eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), especially since you mentioned a stuffy nose and potential allergies. EoE is essentially an allergic reaction in the esophagus triggered by certain foods.
Another possibility is an esophageal motility disorder, which involves spasms or irregular movements of the esophageal muscles. Additionally, functional heartburn could be a cause; this happens when there’s no structural issue, but the nerves in the esophagus become overly sensitive.
To determine the exact cause, I would need a more detailed medical history and possibly some diagnostic tests. If GERD is confirmed, the treatment is typically straightforward and effective. I recommend having a thorough consultation with your doctor to explore this further.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to follow up so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
