What are the long-term effects of a traumatic brain injury?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Despite being an avid reader my entire life, I cannot read books as my focus is compromised now. I struggle with body equilibrium issues, water retention, fluctuating vision issues, headaches, and complete loss of thought in the middle of a sentence. I also have massive anxiety, even under medication.

I had a history of traumatic brain injury when I was 17 years old, for which I spent an extended time in the hospital. My body was also creating excessive hormones, which caused massive swelling in my brain. I have also had other, less traumatic injuries to my head. Are my present sufferings related to these brain injuries?

Thank you.

14) My appetite is poor.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

By your description, your headaches seem to be tension headaches, which may be commonly associated with anxiety disorder. The head injury episodes seem not to be contributing to headaches. I would suggest you consult an endocrinologist. And also, kindly do a brain MRI, complete blood count, vitamin B12 level, and thyroid function tests to rule out the possibilities.

  • Differential diagnosis:

Tension headache.

  • Preventive measures:

Meditation, yoga, and jogging for 20 minutes.

  • Regarding follow-up:

Revert after two weeks with the reports.

Thank you.
