Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My uncle, aged 50, suffered a heart attack last month, and luckily he was saved and is under medications now. He is taking blood thinners. How much is his risk of the next attack? What can he do to reduce his risk apart from taking the prescribed medications? Our family has a history of a heart attacks. So we are worried about his risk. Please help. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. He has a significantly high risk of attacks, given that there is a strong family history. He must always maintain an average blood sugar level, treat hypertension and should be at optimal levels, quit smoking (if he is a smoker), and exercise regularly ( aerobic) provided his cardiac function in echocardiogram is within normal limits. I presume he is also taking a class of medicines known as statins, in addition to blood thinners. There is also a role for folic acid here, given that it treats increased homocysteine levels (it is worthwhile getting your uncle's homocysteine and C-reactive protein (CR) levels checked). Regards.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
