Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 42 years old, and I am experiencing increased heart rate and flutters for one year. For the past week, there is a frequent episode of increased heart rate. My heart rate rises more than 110 bpm. I had bilateral pulmonary embolism five years ago, and I am currently taking tablet Xarelto 10 mg daily. Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I hope you are doing good. I advice you to do the following such as Holter monitoring, to know about your arrythmias, a routine ECG (electrocardiogram) to know whether your arrythmias is controlled or uncontrolled, echocardiogram to know any cardiac pathology or clot formation in chambers, kindly continue to take Xarelto (Rivaroxaban). If rate is uncontrolled (more than 100) take a beta blocker namely tablet Metaprolol 25 mg once daily. Take care.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply. Is this an emergency? Do I need to attend an emergency room? Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You are already taking tablet Xarelto, which means you are already diagnosed with arrhythmias. It is not an emergency, but I suggest you do an ECG (electrocardiogram) to understand the rate and alter your medications. Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I am taking Xarelto as a preventive medication. As I still have to undergo surgeries and injections for my ongoing hip problem, my orthopedician and the spinal surgeon said it is safer to keep me on Xarelto. I also have dizziness and feel lightheaded if I stand for a longer duration. I had an ECG before surgery a few months ago. It just showed sinus tachycardia. Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your ECG (electrocardiogram) shows sinus tachycardia which is not a reason to worry. Sinus tachycardia and complaints of postural lightheadedness and dizziness can be due to the following Anemia, decreased blood pressure drop (postural hypotension), and hyperthyroidism. I suggest taking tablet Metoprolol 25 mg once daily if your heart rate is above 100 beats per minute. Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply. If I do not get the tests mentioned above, am I in danger? Should I go to ER? Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest you check your oxygen saturation; if it is below 95 %, immediately go to the emergency room. If episodes of tachycardia are frequent, kindly consider visiting your doctor immediately. I wish you good health. Take care.
