How to treat microcytic hypochromic anemia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son has microcytic hypochromic anemia and mild anisopoikilocytosis with ovalocytes seen. No hemoparasites seen. What can I do? Currently, he is taking Cyclosporin 100 mg, and previously, he used to take Prednisone 30 mg.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen your attached reports (attachment removed to protect patient identity). As per the reports, he is having autoimmune hemolytic anemia because of a high reticulocyte count, normoblast is seen, DCT (direct Coombs test) positive, and ICT (indirect Coombs test) positive. So, for that, continue prescribed medication that is a steroid that will be beneficial in your case. In an autoimmune condition, antibodies form against the own cells, so Prednisone will be helpful, which has been prescribed to you.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
