What steps to take after receiving HIV test results?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I would like to have an HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) specialist consultation and advice on my recent test results.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the query. I have reviewed your reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). The HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) antibody test report is negative. It is considered conclusive after three months of risk exposure, provided there is no further risk exposure, and you need not go for further HIV tests. If the test is done between the exposure date and three months, I suggest you go for an HIV antibody test after three months of exposure for conclusive results.

I hope this helps. Kindly get back in case of further doubts.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the response. Does this apply to the fourth-generation tests? Can my results be false?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Fourth-generation tests are better and more sensitive than third-generation tests. They are considered sensitive even after one month of exposure. The chances of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) tests coming positive later are almost nil, as the HIV antibodies may take two to six weeks to form, and the window is given till three months.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
