My blood pressure dropped suddenly. Should I reduce my hypertension medications?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 51 years old male. I am diabetic and hypertensive. About two months ago, my fasting blood sugar was about 186, and I weighed 199 lbs. I now have my fasting blood sugar is below 100 most mornings, and I currently weigh 181 lbs. I started an exercise and weight lifting routine and almost cut out sugar and cut my carbohydrate intake. My concern is my blood pressure. About an hour ago, it was 106/60. I am a hypochondriac and have anxiety or panic disorder. I am under Januvia, Lisinopril, and Lorazepam. So my question is, should I be concerned about this blood pressure drop? And should I talk to my doctor about reducing my blood pressure medication? Kindly give your opinion.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I studied your problem carefully. I understand that diabetes is considered as a lifestyle disease. Exercise or decrease in carbohydrates in the diet, etc., should be gradual and not sudden. It should be under the guidance of a dietitian or doctor. You need to consult a doctor and titrate blood pressure medication properly. Sudden weight loss is not desirable as it may end up in complications. However, a weight loss of one pound in a month is an excellent achievement if it is sustained. Please get back for further queries.
