Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 58 years old. I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism 20 years ago. I am on Eltroxin medication since then, 100 mcg daily and twice a week 150 mcg. My T3, T4, and TSH are normal as I do blood analysis every six months. I noticed I am gaining weight from three months although my diet has not changed. Should I increase the dose?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Since your thyroid test results are normal and considering your age, it is not advisable to increase the dose of Eltroxin just because you are gaining weight. If a person does not exercise much and after a certain age, he just keeps adding the weight every year just because aging slows the metabolism naturally. So, instead of increasing Eltroxin (Levothyroxine), I would recommend that you try to walk every day and control your diet.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
