Hello doctor,

I was playing football when my knee gave way and there was a sharp pain for a second before it went off. It does not hurt while walking, sitting, or bending the knee except when I try to bend it while putting my weight on it. If I attempt to push through the pain and squat all the way, the pain subsides a little but there is a strong pulling sensation at the top of the kneecap. When I stand up again the pain goes away instantly. There is no swelling or bruising around the knee. This happened a couple of months ago as well and it went away within a week. I was wondering what it might be and how can I stop it from happening again. I am in my early twenties with no other significant problems with both my knees.

This is either a meniscal injury or a chondromalacia patella. I suggest you take the following medications.

  1. Take tablet Ibuprofen 400 mg in the morning and night after food for 10 days.
  2. Take tablet Rabeprazole 20 mg in the morning before food for 10 days.
  3. Take tablet Shelcal (calcium and vitamin D3) 500 mg in the morning before food for 30 days.
  4. Take tablet D-Shine (vitamin D3) 60K once daily for 10 days followed by once a month for 11 months.

Take these tablets only if you are not allergic to them and if you do not have bronchial asthma.

Activities that cause pain should be avoided temporarily. If your knee is swollen or sore, I suggest you avoid the following positions and activities until your knee pain and swelling resolve.

  1. Squatting.
  2. Kneeling.
  3. Twisting.
  4. Pivoting.
  5. Jogging.
  6. Aerobics.
  7. Dancing.
  8. Playing sports.

I suggest you follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. You should wear a hinged knee brace to support the knee joint. You should wear it throughout the day and you can remove it at night.
  2. Apply ice packs twice daily for 15 minutes on each knee.
  3. Exercises are very important to strengthen the quadriceps muscles. Hence do the exercises daily for 20 minutes as it will help to reduce the pain.
  4. Take an X-ray of your knee joint, both AP (anterior-posterior) and lateral views, and upload them for accurate advice.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.
