How can left atrial dilation be managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 48-year-old male, with a height of 5 feet 8 inches and a weight of 250 pounds. I have no health problems. My blood pressure is 118/70 mmHg. My total cholesterol is 165 mg/dL, LDL is 99 mg/dL, HDL is 46 mg/dL, and triglycerides are 101 mg/dL. I had a heart ultrasound (sonography), which showed mild left atrial (LA) dilation of 4.8 cm.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There is no major concern, but it is important to understand why your left atrium is dilated. It could be due to higher blood pressure, problems with the heart valves, or a heart muscle issue. I recommend seeing a specialist, as you may need additional testing, such as heart rhythm monitoring and/or a stress test.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

The Probable causes

The probable causes are high blood pressure and valvular disease.

Investigations to be done

Investigations include a heart rhythm monitor.
