How to interpret the test results and know if my sperm counts are normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had a semen test but do not understand the results. I need to know if my sperm is strong enough to get my wife pregnant. I have been married for 15 years but have no children. This is causing me great depression and anxiety.

I am currently taking Fluoxetine 20 mg daily.

My past medical history involves the following medications:

  1. Paroxetine.
  2. Mirtazapine.
  3. Sertaline.

I have attached my laboratory test reports.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed your semen analysis report (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), and you have oligo astheno teratozoospermia. This means your counts and the actively motile sperms are low. Also, the motile sperms are morphologically inappropriate for fertilization, with evidence of infection. With these, it is unlikely that your wife may conceive children.

You need to be treated, and the treatment is for at least four months because the life cycle of sperm is 120 days which is four months.
