Last week my neighbor who is a 7-year-old boy died due to malaria. I am not able to overcome it and I am very depressed. And, I have a few questions,

1. Why are there no vaccines for malaria?

2. What are the common measures for curing diseases like malaria?

3. How can malaria be eradicated?

Kindly, give us some tips to be safe.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

I have shared a few points on malaria,

1. Usually malaria is not fatal, but it can become fatal if not managed properly.

2. Death rates due to malaria have significantly decreased in the last couple of years.

3. According to WHO (World Health Organization), the global malaria case incidence rate was 59 cases per 1000 people at risk against a target of 35, putting it off track by 40 %. The global mortality rate about two years ago was 15.3 deaths per 1,00,000 people at risk against a target of 8.9.

4. Malaria vaccine has been developed under the name Mosquirix malaria vaccine (RTS,S malaria vaccine). This is the first malaria vaccine that has been developed.

5. The WHO recommends a four-dose schedule with one month apart in children from five months. Some resources include a range of 6 to 45 months.

6. Regarding your question about treating it, antimalarial drugs are available for its treatment. The most common combination used is Artemether and Lumefantrine.

7. Regarding your question about its eradication, it can be done by removing the breeding places of mosquitoes as it breeds in water-logged places such as rain pools, water bodies, irrigation canals, seepage from water pipes, neglected wells, artificial containers, and man-made ditches. So avoid stagnation of non-flowing water, use indoor residual spraying, and insecticide-treated bed nets.

I hope this has helped you.
