Why has platelet count gone down after CABG?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My father underwent CABG for six months. Till then he was on Clopilet alone. His platelet would remain at 150000. After CABG, he has been put on Ecosprin and after that, his platelets remain at 110000 to 140000. Is that fine? He has no other complaints. Is there something we can do to improve his platelet count? He had a stroke and also underwent chemotherapy for NHL four years. I have attached the list of medicines he is currently taking. I have attached his CBC report for your reference. Why platelet count went down after CABG?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Based on our query, my opinion is as follows:

  1. Platelet count at any time above 100000 per microliter of blood is always good. The minimum platelet count, most of us expect is 50000, below which mild risk of bleeding starts.
  2. Hence, 110000 to 140000 per microliter of blood are indeed good and not to be worried about.
  3. All other values are within the normal range. So, there is no medication side effect. None of the medications prescribed affect platelet production.
  4. There is no specific treatment for the improvement of platelets. If production was affected, it could have been improved. If more were getting destroyed, destruction could have been controlled.
  5. As all other blood indices are normal, neither is occurring. However, with the present count which is really good, I would advise you not to think of improving platelets and going for any alternative medicine, which could be risky.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Does CABG or aging affect platelet count? Is papaya fruit good for platelets? Can he have gooseberry to improve platelet count?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  1. No, CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting) or age does not affect platelet count.
  2. The platelet count is good. Unless malnutrition is present and the cause of low platelet count is found, no other treatment or intervention is necessary.
  3. Gooseberry is supposed to be considerably better than papaya fruit, considering calories and nutrition. The nutritionally rich diet should suffice.
