Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am late on my period. My last period was two months back. Generally, my period is late, irregular and maximum it goes for 45 days. I have never been late so much. It is almost 50 days. I have a kid of 2 yrs and do not want to have another one. I did the pregnancy test at home twice and it came negative. I am not sure whether I am pregnant or not. If yes, then is it a safe time for abortion? For my first kid, the pregnancy test at home used to be always positive. So, I am not sure what to do. I have booked an appointment next week with a gynecologist. I have heard that medical abortion is only possible within 7 weeks. So, what will happen in my case?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
If the pregnancy test is negative, then the chance of pregnancy is almost nil. The period may be late due to many reasons including anxiety and stress. Pregnancy test becomes positive by the fifth week. So, you will be able to get abortion two weeks after the test becomes positive, if by chance. So, you have time to check with the gynecologist.
Patient's Query
Thank you doctor,
Are home pregnancy tests 100 % reliable? I have read the blogs that we have to do a blood test or USG to confirm. But, is 50 days of delay not enough to go for the home pregnancy test? I had the same problem four years back. At that time I went to a gynecologist, and after confirming the home urine test at her clinic, she gave me a tablet for a week and then menstruation happened the following week. She also did all the test like transvaginal, thyroid, CBC, etc. But, all were fine except thyroid was just a bit low. For that, she told that medicine is not required. She suggested having a baby as soon as possible. When I was pregnant, she gave me thyroid medicine, and after pregnancy, she stopped. I am not curious as what is going inside me. We always have protected sex. Sometimes, pull out method and this is where I doubt to be pregnant but then my husband is very careful as we do not want the second child.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
By the 50th day of missed periods, urine pregnancy test should be positive if there is pregnancy. Otherwise, it will be negative. The test is correct except on occasions when if the kit is defective or the urine is diluted or if the test is not properly done. You can do transvaginal ultrasound.

Thank you doctor,
I had an appointment with gynecologist yesterday. She asked me about urine pregnancy test. I told her that two days back I tested and it was negative. She has given 10 mg Meprate tablet for seven days and period will follow. I asked her what if I am pregnant because I am feeling feverish and have menstrual like cramps. She assured that there is less chance and if period does not happen even after seven days, then we will do a few tests. She has asked to come with TSH test and to discontinue breastfeeding. I told her that we do not want a second baby now. For that, she told that first we need to confirm pregnancy. I am worried. If I am really pregnant, then will taking Meprate 10 mg effect anything?
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Meprate (Medroxyprogesterone acetate) is often given in pregnancy to protect from a miscarriage. So, it is not an issue even if you are pregnant.
