Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I think I have ALS; what are the symptoms of it? I have been experiencing muscle twitching and spasm for over a month, and I am scared of having ALS. Please help me with this issue.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and would explain that muscle twitching is a very common symptom related to many metabolic causes like high caffeine intake, dehydration, thyroid gland dysfunction, vitamin D or vitamin B12 deficiency, insomnia, etc. But when muscle twitching is associated with muscle wasting (loss of muscle volume) and muscle weakness, it is necessary to investigate ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or peripheral neuropathy. ALS can also cause difficulty swallowing (choking with fluids and hard food) and a hoarse voice. I suggest performing some blood tests to investigate a possible metabolic cause:

1) Thyroid hormone levels.

2) Blood electrolytes.

3) Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 plasma levels.

I hope you will find this information helpful.

Kind regards.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
