Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am seven weeks pregnant, suffer from migraines, and am taking Naratriptan 2.5 mg. Is it safe to consume it while pregnant?

Answered by Dr. Reetika

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for writing in, and I understand your concern.

I am sure that taking medicine for migraine will not make it disappear rather will create a dependency on medicines. Whether your migraine started after getting pregnant, or do you have a history of migraine?

I will recommend non-pharmacological steps like relaxation techniques, proper sleep, no stress, etc., to start with and then followed by an analgesic.

I will not recommend tablet Naratriptan to start with.

Kindly reply for a better assessment of your condition. Generally, tablet Naratriptan is taken only when everything has failed.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I have been diagnosed with migraines for the past six years and was under control with medication Propranolol 10 mg and Naratriptan 2.5 mg when needed. Tylenol does not help me at all. It is something I have been suffering for a couple of years, and with being pregnant now, I am not sure if that is triggering the migraine.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thanks for the update. Now I understand that you have been experiencing migraine for quite some time and have tried all things, including tablet Tylenol (Paracetamol), which has not proved effective.

Tablet Naratriptan is helping you, but I will request you to consult your gynecologist for the exact dose and timings as every patient has different pregnancy conditions. Even though some gynecologists prescribe tablet Naratriptan for some patients, some discourage depending upon the medical history and how pregnancy progresses. So I suggest consulting your treating gynecologist, who will be in the best situation to decide based upon your medical condition, scans, and other pregnancy details.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
