I had jaw surgery. Can it cause gum whitening post-surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I noticed a change in the color of my upper gum a few months ago. I had jaw surgery a few years back for an open bite, and a metal plate was placed in my jaw during the procedure. The gum now appears white, with web-like patterns and patches.

Another dentist suggested it might be scar tissue, but this change appeared long after I had fully healed from the surgery. My gums were completely pink until a few months ago, before this discoloration developed.

Currently, I am taking Vistaril, Prozac, Zyprexa, and Junel (birth control). This change is new; I do not recall having it in the past. I also have a picture of the gums for you to take a look at.

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The gums looked blanched or whitish due to lesser blood circulation and less inflammation than before. There is no need to worry, as this occurs as the gums are completely healed.

It could also happen due to decreased blood pressure and complete healing of inflammation post-surgery. Even medications like antidepressants can cause some drying or blanching of the soft mucosa tissue of the gums.

Take care.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the response.

I am wondering about what is causing the reduction in blood circulation in the upper gums?

Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It might be due to decreased blood pressure, less blood oxygenation due to changed dietary habits or medications, etc. Usually, it gets normalized in a few weeks.

Anyway, there is nothing worrisome about it. It is a physiological response to your condition, and you should return to normal in the future.

Take care.
