Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected oral sex with a woman belonging to a Southern country in a massage parlor in an Western country. I also had a cut in my mouth while performing oral sex. Am I at an increased risk of contracting HIV? I am so scared. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

We will help you identify and solve your health concerns.

There are very rare chances of acquiring HIV through oral unprotected sex with a cut in the mouth. Since the lady is from a Southern country, the chance of developing HIV is slightly high. The prevalence of HIV is high in southern countries. Anyway, I advise you to do the following:

  1. Maintain proper oral hygiene.
  2. Use Povidone-iodine (Betadine) mouthwash after breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Mix two full teaspoons of Povidone-iodine mouthwash in half a cup of lukewarm water and rinse the oral cavity thoroughly and gargle the throat.
  3. Include citrus fruits like lemon, orange, kiwi, gooseberries, and blueberries in your diet.

If you experience any symptoms, then do a test. ELISA (enzyme-linked immunoassay) kit test one card is used in India as a screening test for HIV. If the result is negative, it means that you are not infected with HIV. If there are no symptoms, then no need to do any test.

Divert your mind from this incident by engaging in outdoor games, gym, reading books, listening to music, and so on.

I hope you got the answers to your queries. Do get back if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
