Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 22-year-old male. My weight is 110.23 pounds. Around 50 days ago, I had a sore throat, nose itching, and cough. I noticed a tiny amount of blood with mucus (only two times). I do not know whether it has come from the lung or nose or throat. Then, my doctor told me to get a complete blood count test and chest x-ray (PA). Everything was fine. ESR was a little high, but after some days when I tested again, the ESR also become normal. Then, my doctor prescribed me an antibiotic tablet and Montek LC. After the complete course, my throat pain was gone, but I still had a cough. So, the doctor told me to continue Montek LC for a month. I completed one month's course, but I still have a cough. A cough is sometimes dry and sometimes with mucus. I do not understand the reason for my cough. I am leaving abroad in four days, but my cough is not getting better. What can I do now?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for writing your query to me.

Recurrent episodes of a cough especially at night, chest tightness and difficulty in breathing are symptoms of asthma. Asthma is a chronic disease affecting the airways. It is due to the allergic reactions to environmental allergens. Most commonly it is due to the dust and pollen allergy. Usually, all the investigations like chest x-ray and blood tests may be normal in asthma. The gold standard test to confirm the diagnosis isspirometry test. It is also called as pulmonary function test.

In your case, you are suffering from all the above mentioned classical symptoms of asthma, and I advise you to do spirometry test to confirm the possibility of asthma. After a definitive diagnosis is made, take the help of a local pulmonologist for starting expert treatment for asthma. The best way to treat asthma is to avoid dust and use a mask. For relieving symptoms of breathlessness and cough, I suggest you Ventolin Inhaler (Albuterol) two puffs thrice daily. To note, asthma is a chronic disease, and there is no permanent cure for asthma. Medicines will work only for controlling the symptoms and improving the quality of life.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

After two days, I am traveling abroad. There I have to work all the time in the air conditioner room. What do you think? Is the AC room harmful to me? If so what is the solution?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As I said, asthma is a chronic condition and there is no permanent cure. So prevention is better than cure. When you are working in an AC room, the cold temperature and dust inside the room can cause breathlessness or cough. So try to avoid dust as much as possible. Regularly taking inhalers medicines will help you and you can work in AC rooms also.

So, I advise you to continue inhalers and avoid dust.

Thank you.
