HomeAnswersHematologypolycythemia veraDoes a mild rise in hemoglobin, hematocrit, and WBC indicate polycythemia vera?

I have abdominal pain, and my blood report shows high hemoglobin and hematocrit. Why?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have left and right-sided abdominal pain. I had bloody mucus in the stool, which has resolved, having itchy dry skin all over. Blood test says high white blood cell count, high hematocrit, high hemoglobin, and a very high ALT in the liver test. The abdominal CT scan was clear, except the bowel and ovary looked to be stuck together. Please help me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Actually, in the attached graphical report (attachments remove to protect the patient's identity), ALT (alanine aminotransferase) is not raised twofold means not elevated more than 84. So, it does not indicate liver dysfunction. In liver problems, ALT usually raised more than twofold of the normal range. Your hemoglobin and hematocrit were also not raised. Your total WBC (white blood cell) count only at borderline high. So it does not need to be much concerned. However, kindly attach your full report. The above attachment contains only a graphical presentation mainly. Do not worry.

For bowel and ovary adhesion, kindly consult a surgeon. If adhesion is more and symptomatic, then surgical adhesiolysis means removal of adhesion might need to be done. I hope this was helpful.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you.

I am more concerned about the blood test results rising so rapidly in such a short period of time. I have a common cold and cough but did not think that could raise all those tests. I am more concerned about the rising. I am worried I have polycythemia vera. Kindly give your opinion.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your blood values do not raise the possibility of polycythemia vera. In polycythemia vera, hemoglobin level usually above 17 and hematocrit above 55. In polycythemia vera total WBC count also raised much. But in the attached graphical report does not raise such polycythemia vera like blood cancer possibility. Kindly attach your full numerical report if available. The attached report does not indicate blood cancer polycythemia vera as per my opinion. I hope this was helpful.
