What is the ideal week to test beta-hCG for pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am in my fourth week after the last menstrual cycle. I took blood tests in the third week, and my hCG levels were 17 mIU/ml. Is this normal? Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. It is difficult to determine whether an hCG level of 17 mIU/mL at three weeks is normal without any additional information. hCG levels vary widely during early pregnancy; the normal range can be broad. Generally, an hCG level below 5 mIU/mL is considered non-pregnant, while levels above 25 mIU/mL indicate pregnancy. An hCG level of 17 mIU/mL at three weeks could potentially indicate early pregnancy, but it is important to note that hCG levels rise rapidly during the early weeks of pregnancy.

Therefore, I suggest you repeat the hCG test to see if the levels have doubled or tripled over a few days. It is also important to remember that hCG levels can vary for various reasons, including the test's timing, the accuracy of the test, and individual differences in hCG production.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
