Is it possible to get pregnant if we had intercourse on the fifth day of the periods?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I just got married and had a physical relationship two to three times with my partner after five days of her period. I forgot to use precautions during sex. So is there any chance of pregnancy, and if yes, what can I do to avoid this?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I will just give you safe days.

Ovulation day is determined based on the duration of periods. For a lady with 28 days cycle, ovulation will be on day 14, 14 days before periods. So if her cycle is regular with 30 days, ovulation is on day 16, and so on. The first day of bleeding is day one of the cycle. Now if the cycle is irregular, the calculation is the longest cycle minus 8, and the shortest cycle minus 11 is the duration of ovulation. For example, if the longest cycle is 34 days, and shortest cycle is 27 days, then 34-8= 26, 27-11 = 16, so between 16 to 26 will be the ovulation. The life of an egg is 24 hours, and the life of a sperm is about 72 hours. As per your history, she has no chance of pregnancy, as around the fifth day, she cannot ovulate.

Suppose you have such an unexpected exposure. You can take an emergency contraceptive within 24 hours. She will have periods within 7 to 10 days of the pill. But it is not advisable to repeatedly have unprotected sex and take pills in the same cycle. This will cause hormone imbalance and irregular periods. The best method is oral combined contraceptive pills (for example, tablet Novelon (Desogestrel and Ethinylestradiol), tablet Ovral (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol), tablet Ovral G (Ethinylestradiol and Norgestrel), Duoluton-L (Levonorgestrel and Ethinylestradiol), or Intimacy plus 2 (Desogestrel and Ethinylestradiol) packets of 21 pills). Let her start with the first pill on day one of her period. Take one pill at night for the next 21 days. Give a break of seven days, then have the next packet from day eight, do not wait for the period. It will be the best protection from the next month. Till then, you can use a condom. This will regularize the periods and give you freedom of sex any day, even without any protection. Consult a specialist doctor and take medications with their consent.

Thank you.
