At 84, what is causing my dad’s burning while urinating?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My father is 84 years old and has an enlarged prostate, experiencing extreme burning while urinating. Otherwise, I also feel a lot of burning sensation in my entire body. I got admitted last year to the hospital.
I am attaching my last year ultra sound report and current urine routine report. I take Silodal 8D & Gluconorm SR 500 for diabetes. I have a sleep disorder and take Zolfresh 10. Please tell me, why is this happening?
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
I can understand how uncomfortable and concerning this must be for you. Based on the urine report you have shared, there is evidence suggesting a urinary tract infection. The presence of positive nitrites, positive leukocyte esterase, and 18 to 20 pus cells per high-power field indicates inflammation and likely bacterial infection in the urinary tract.
In an 84 year old gentleman like you with an enlarged prostate, this can occur because the bladder may not empty, allowing bacteria to grow more easily. This infection could be a significant cause of the severe burning you experience during urination.
Your urine report does not show blood, protein, glucose, or ketones, which is reassuring. However, given your age, diabetes, enlarged prostate, and severe symptoms, it would be advisable to see your physician or urologist promptly.
A urine culture may be needed to identify the exact bacteria and determine the most effective antibiotic. You can do the following things;
-
Continue taking your prescribed medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.
-
Maintain good hydration if there are no fluid restrictions.
-
The burning sensation throughout the entire body is unlikely to be explained by the urine infection alone and may require separate evaluation, particularly considering diabetes, which can sometimes affect the nerves and cause burning sensations.
I hope this information helps you.
Feel free to ask further queries.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello, Doctor,
This is helpful. We will consult a urologist, but currently, my dad is not in a state to go because of his age and this infection. Could you prescribe any antibiotic to treat the infection till the time we visit the doctor? Also, can I consult a Urologist online? Would that be helpful, or given his condition, physical examination is needed?
Kindly help.
Thank you.
