Can my enlarged prostate turn into cancer at 50 years?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have an enlarged prostate, and I worry that it may become prostate cancer in the future. I am a 50-year-old male, and may I know what the symptoms of prostate cancer are?

How should I prevent myself from prostate cancer? Also, what can an enlarged prostate cause me, and how can I treat it?

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Prostate enlargement and prostate cancer are two different entities. It does not necessarily mean that prostate enlargement leads to prostate cancer. Symptoms of prostate cancer and prostate enlargement overlap, and they include blood in urine, urinary flow problems, or bone pain (in higher stages ). The best way to prevent or early detection of prostate cancer is yearly prostate cancer screening, which includes serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA blood test, and per rectal examination of the prostate by a urologist.

This screening method detects prostate cancer at a very early stage. To treat prostate enlargement, you need to do further tests like an abdominal ultrasound and uroflowmetry. These tests decide the severity of enlargement, and medical treatment (alpha-blocker group of medication) is started in mild to moderate cases. In severe cases, surgical procedures such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) are done.

I suggest consulting a urologist near you and starting treatment under his supervision.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
